Johannes Cabal, a necromancer of some little infamy, has faced many horrors during his career, but in this tale he tells of an early encounter with something that horrified even him.

Pantomime.

A provincial theatre has seen a series of strange deaths. The young Cabal investigates, even though this requires him to don red tights, a curling moustache, and become... the Demon King.

Back in 2006, "Exeunt Demon King" was the second Johannes Cabal story published. It has long been out of print. So, buy your wine gums and Kia-Ora in the foyer, find your seat in the dress circle, and join Cabal as he hunts the evil that haunts the Alhambra Theatre.

Johannes Cabal takes to the stage in this pre-necromancer prequel. It’s not often we see Cabal in tights, and even less often we sneak a peek of his pre-necromancer days. But lights, action, the undead: Exeunt Demon King has it all.
When a 22-year-old Johannes Cabal hears about a haunting in a local theatre, he wheedles into a stage production, playing, no less, the Demon King. It’s every bit as funny and indignant as it sounds.

The Good: Cabal is such a fantastic protagonist. Sarcastic, arrogant, clever and lonely, he’s a tremendous joy to read, both onstage and off. The reader has the double delight of championing him onwards, and knowing he’s earnt whatever terrible things happen to him.
If you’ve read Johannes Cabal: Necromancer, then EDK ties in well with both it and another Cabal short, the Ereshkigal Working, and expands on a few points in Necromancer. Although I suspect that the overarching story between these three doesn’t quite add up, Exeunt Demon King is nevertheless a robust, clever and funny read, full of drama, theatrics and violence.

Improvements: Cabal doesn’t play well with others. That seems to be more true in EDK than others. I’d like to have seen more fleshed out characters here.
It could also benefit from a touch more detail. No thespian, I found some of the backstage action difficult to follow, owing to an overreliance on theatre jargon.

Verdict: This is one of my favourite Cabal stories. If you’re a Cabal fan, OMG read it. And if you’re not, OMG read it. Young Cabal is a pure (malevolent) delight.

Exeunt Demon King Johannes Cabal series eBook Jonathan L Howard Reviews

I'd never known there was a short story that introduced Cabal and I'm very happy to have found it. Good read and it's a young Cabal whose not exactly jaded yet.
Short stand alone story with Cabal investigating the happenings in a small theater. I love this series because Johannes Cabal - necromancer with an attitude - is so unpleasant but it makes him interesting. He definitely feels his experiments are more important than anything and does not stop at breaking the law, I've read several and this was good but not relative to the main series.
My first introduction to Johannes Cabal & it's a good one. Quirky and sly, this clever short story put a grin on my face for the full read. It's Aleister Crowley if he'd had a sense of humor (he did not) and a less godlike view of himself. It's funny and odd and there's a police sergeant and someone in red tights and tiny & highly offended voices saying "Not gnomes!" … a whole lot in one little short story and terrific fun.
I simply love Jonathon L. Howard's writing and his character, Johannes Cabal. So far, I find everything he's done in this canon to be wonderful. This was a pretty funny side-story for Cabal. One can really imagine him letting down his hair to play a demon king and doing so with aplomb--almost--almost--allowing himself to have fun.
i am obsessed with Johannesburg Cabal. Wonderful character, really vivid world, and super witty writing. All of this series is a joy to read and I purposely read these books slowly in order to thoroughly enjoy them, and make the adventure last longer. If you like occult fantasy, this is some of the best out there.
The story isn't quite as good as "Blustery Day" but it is by no means bad. The tone is darker and the humour not as snarky, but the pacing is great and the story moves along smoothly. The slight twist at the end isn't really surprising if you've read at least the first book, but did catch me off guard nevertheless. The visual imagery was fantastic and in a couple spots drink spew inducing.
Johannes Cabal is such a gem of character! This is a story of his youth, time before to be a necromancer. To read this story is a great spectacle, and not only symbolically as it has a lot of theater, cycles of true magic blended with the magic of the scenarios, and a crime hidden in plain sight.
I enjoyed quite a lot this story and wanted to read more tales and was a pity to find I had already read each one of the little 99 cents stories of Cabal x_x What is a good excuse to read now the novels!
